Integrated fence-to-fence betterment solutions

Track performance depends on the integrity of the entire rail corridor. Drainage, vegetation, fencing and civil infrastructure directly influence ballast condition, geometry stability and long-term asset life.

An integrated “Fence-to-Fence” betterment model coordinates track and civil maintenance within a single possession, addressing the root causes of asset deterioration and restoring corridor resilience.

Local impact & engagement

Our civil works are delivered with a commitment to increasing Social Capital. We actively engage local subcontractors and maintain a 7.4% Indigenous participation rate across our workforce. On every civil project, we respect the Traditional Custodians of the land, ensuring that our presence leaves a positive legacy for the communities connected by the rail network.

Track works maintenance

Mechanised track rehabilitation programs are supported by experienced engineering and delivery teams across examination, certification and project supervision functions. Capability extends across the full lifecycle of track maintenance, including:

  • Track certification - examination and certification of all track and drainage works by qualified Handback Engineers
  • Detailed scoping and condition reports, including required track corrections
  • Detailed track and turnout inspections
  • Ballast fouling condition assessments
  • Track/turnout construction supervision
  • Defect management and rectification
  • Track corrections supervision
  • Rail adjustment/destress (PICS)
  • Track reconditioning and project management
  • Ballast logistics, precision unloading and distribution using integrated material handling systems
  • Quality Assurance

Ballast unloading capability delivers the full suite of supporting activities including ballast stockpile location assessments, community consultation, ballast receipt, ballast wagon loading and ballast placement.

Internal capacity includes options to support using specialised material handling systems, including MFS and MFC wagons with integrated conveyor and hopper units. These systems enable controlled placement of ballast, continuous loading and unloading operations, and efficient spoil management within constrained rail corridors.

Rail & civil works maintenance

Civil works within the rail corridor are delivered either as integrated fence-to-fence programs or standalone maintenance projects.

Capability includes:

Ballast distribution and unloading using ballast trains, manual ballast rakes and MFS/MFC material handling wagons

Continuous material handling systems enabling ballast placement and spoil removal without adjacent track access

Conveyor-based unloading supporting precision placement across complex grades, curves and constrained corridors

Safe and effective management and control of undesirable vegetation (AQF3 Chemical Accreditation), maintaining compliance, preserving sightlines and protecting track and corridor integrity.

Drainage maintenance and system upgrades, including inspection, cleaning and renewal of drainage assets to manage water ingress, reduce ballast fouling and support long-term track stability.

Fencing management and repair to maintain corridor security, protect rail assets and ensure safe separation between infrastructure and surrounding environments.

Culvert maintenance and upgrades, including removal and installation to maintain effective water flow, support embankment stability and protect overall formation performance.

Safe cutting, removal and disposal of redundant rail infrastructure, maintaining corridor safety and preparing assets for future works and upgrades.

Frequently asked questions

What is "Fence-to-Fence" rail maintenance?

Fence-to-fence maintenance is an integrated approach where SRA manages every aspect of the rail corridor, from the track and ballast to the drainage, fencing, and access roads, ensuring total asset health in a single possession. We ensure maximum utilisation is achieved for all machinery and resources on our project sites to deliver the greatest possible outcome for our clients.

Does SRA provide track handback and certification?

Yes. Our in-house team includes qualified Track Certifiers who provide full examination, certification, and quality assurance for all track and civil works, ensuring safe and timely network restarts.

Why is precision ballast unloading critical for network resilience?

Effective ballast depth and profile are the foundation of track stability. Precision unloading allows for significant alignment corrections and track lifts, which are essential for mitigating heat-related track buckles and reducing wear on rollingstock. By integrating this with our wider civil works, we ensure the ballasted track performs  in unison with the improved drainage and civil conditions.
