Restoring track geometry & network speed

Track resurfacing is the foundation of a reliable rail network. At Swietelsky Rail Australia (SRA), we combine world-class tamping technology with expert engineering to correct track alignment and level to absolute design specifications.

Our mission is simple: to remove Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSRs) and restore your network to full operational line speed. By integrating high-production tamping with Dynamic Track Stabilisation (DTS), we ensure maximum track quality with minimum possession time, allowing for a safer and more efficient return to service at line speed.

National reach and proven performance

SRA is a trusted partner for Australia's major rail networks. We currently deliver a component of the National Resurfacing Program for ARTC (contracted to 2029) and have recently been awarded a position on the Sydney Trains Metropolitan Track Resurfacing Master Services Agreement panel contract (up to eight years from September 2025). Our resurfacing teams consistently deliver ahead of schedule and incident-free, setting the benchmark for technical excellence across the country.

Sustainable fleet innovation

In line with our 2025–2027 ESG Strategy, we are modernising our resurfacing fleet to reduce environmental impact.

Lower Emissions

We continuously invest in technologies that lower emissions and improve dust suppression, waste management, material reuse and recycling.

Biodegradable Technology

Over 50% of our fleet now utilises Panolin bio-based hydraulic oils, ensuring our resurfacing operations protect the soil and waterways of the rail corridor.

High-production resurfacing fleet

High-production resurfacing capability is supported by specialised tamping, stabilisation and geometry measurement systems configured for heavy haul and metropolitan networks.

The fleet combines continuous-action production machines, turnout-specific equipment and precision survey technology to restore alignment, consolidate ballast and verify geometry against design tolerances. Integrated plant and data systems enable efficient possession management and controlled handback at operational speed.

The Unimat 08-275/3S is a cyclic action single-sleeper leveling, lifting, lining and tamping machine with three-rail lifting for plain track and turnouts.

SRA SSP 303 Ballastcleaner (1)

SSP 303 ballast regulator

SRA’s SSP 303’s are high-performance ballast regulating and profiling machines with storage hoppers. Articulated design with shoulder ploughs, centre plough, brush box and hopper as well as water spraying devices for dust suppression. They are capable of performing all ballast profiling, regulating and track brooming functions in a single continuous forward pass of the machine.

Frequently asked questions

How does resurfacing remove Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSRs)?

By correcting track geometry (alignment and level) to absolute design specifications, our tampers remove the defects that cause speed restrictions, allowing trains to return to full operational speed.

What is 'Dynamic Track Stabilisation'?

Our 09-3XD machine uses DTS to consolidate the ballast bed immediately after tamping. This mimics the effect of thousands of tonnes of train traffic, allowing the track to be handed back at line speed immediately after work, instantly providing clients with the opportunity for maximum operational performance.

Does SRA provide resurfacing for switches and crossings?

Yes, our Unimat 08-275 is specifically designed for complex switch and turnout tamping, ensuring seamless geometry through the most critical parts of the network.
