Project Description

Swietelsky Rail Australia (SRA) is proud to have successfully delivered the Sandgate Track Lift Project for ARTC, completing a significant package of track, ballast and drainage improvements during a continuous 72-hour possession from 15–18 May 2026.

Located on a key gateway into and out of the Port of Newcastle for the Hunter Valley coal network, the Sandgate corridor plays a critical role in supporting the safe and efficient movement of freight. The project was designed to improve track geometry, drainage performance and long-term network reliability through an area historically impacted by challenging ground conditions and flooding risk.

More than 60 personnel worked around the clock across both the Up and Down Main lines to deliver the project, which involved substantial track lifting, ballast renewal, drainage improvements and access upgrades. The works were carefully planned and executed to improve the long-term resilience and operational performance of this important freight corridor.

The project also required careful management of environmental considerations, with works undertaken adjacent to a sensitive wetland environment. Detailed planning and strict environmental controls ensured the project could be delivered while protecting the surrounding area and maintaining productivity throughout the possession.

A standout achievement of the project was the delivery of the works with 100% machine reliability, enabling the team to maximise the available possession window and maintain consistent production across the entire operation, successfully completing all project scope ahead of planned schedule.

The scale of coordination required across the possession reflected the integrated approach that has become a hallmark of SRA project delivery. Bringing together specialised rail plant, experienced operators, engineering expertise and round-the-clock support teams, the project was executed with a clear focus on safety, quality and productivity. This collaborative approach enabled the team to maximise the available possession window while maintaining strong operational and safety performance throughout the works.
