RM95 Ballast Cleaner May 2026 3 Night Shift

Project Description

In May 2026, Swietelsky Rail Australia successfully delivered the final possession under ARTC’s Early Works Ballast Rehabilitation Program on the Main South Corridor, marking the completion of a significant phase of infrastructure renewal within the federally funded Network Investment Program.

Delivered within a complex operational environment, the works involved large-scale mechanised ballast rehabilitation, material handling and track restoration activities designed to improve the long-term resilience, reliability and performance of this critical freight and passenger rail corridor. Working around the clock with a workforce of more than 100 personnel and a fleet of 79 specialised rail and support vehicles, SRA successfully completed 100% of the planned ballast cleaning scope while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality and operational excellence.

The possession showcased the full capability of SRA’s integrated delivery model, combining ballast cleaning, material handling, spoil management, ballast installation and high-production resurfacing operations within a tightly controlled possession environment. Through detailed planning and close collaboration with ARTC and project stakeholders, the team delivered more than 10 kilometres of track resurfacing while completing extensive ballast rehabilitation works to restore track condition and support long-term asset performance.

The project demonstrated the benefits of modern mechanised maintenance techniques in extending asset life, improving drainage and ballast condition, and restoring track geometry. These outcomes contribute directly to improved network reliability, reduced maintenance intervention requirements and greater consistency in rail operations, supporting ARTC’s objective of delivering a safer, more resilient and more efficient rail network for freight and passenger operators.

Completed safely and incident-free, the possession represented a fitting conclusion to the Early Works Program and further strengthened the partnership between SRA and ARTC. The successful delivery highlighted the value of innovation, specialist rail maintenance expertise and high-production plant in achieving complex infrastructure outcomes while minimising disruption to rail operations.
